About the Artist / About the Series
Alex Box is an internationally renowned artist who has redefined the role of creativity in makeup and beauty. Box’s sensitive exploration of surface has secured her role as a key artist, collaborating with the world’s leading designers (Issey Miyake, Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Vivienne Westwood), photographers (Nick Knight, Paolo Roversi, Sølve Sundsbø), musicians (Lady Gaga, Frank Ocean, Michael Stipe, Robert Smith), choreographers (Wayne McGregor, Akram Khan) and tech developers (Google, Microsoft, Samsung, Magic Leap). John Lee Bird, days 1-200
About the Artist / About the Series
John Lee Bird is a London based artist. Bird’s work is defined by his distinctive use of line. He uses diagrammatic line to make intensely human studies; whether the object be a portrait or a more abstract vision of matters of the human condition. He has exhibited all over the world to much acclaim.
Bird is a regular Laboratory contributor. His work has graced the cover of the HYMN issue and he created some pieces for the FEAR issue. The Laboratory exhibited his work for the launch of the IMAGE issue in Los Angeles.
One Small Step at A Time represents a year in John Lee Bird's life.
To heal from an abusive relationship Bird created this incredible series of images. There are 365 mixed media artworks, one made each day between Christmas Day 2014 and Christmas Eve 2015.
"Each day an image, letting it all out. Putting the pieces back into place. Taking one small step at a time. Set free."
Bird says of his creative process "The work is about a search to find something, seeking out the strands that chart the journey between people, time and place. An attempt to document the ache and longing to make meaning in space. Transcribing the fragmented narrative that constitutes the everyday by abstracting the unseen and the unspoken in the belief that one might dare to hope to comprehend the human heart."
