SUKIE SMITH does it again
SUKIE GOES SOLO
Our very own Lab Mag contributor and stellar musical madam has announced her move into the spotlight. She’s gone solo. In the year of the dragon, we’re very excited to watch our favourite chanteuse burn a lyrical path through the cosmos.
She is happily compared to PJ Harvey and Sharon Van Etten. Those who know KNOW. She’s a writer, an actress, a musician, an original thinker and a well kept secret. It looks like the cat is out of the bag. Sukie Smith is stepping into the spotlight.
The Glass Dress and a Ringing Bell dropped on March 8th, International Womens Day and it is full to the brim with the usual mix of haunting tunes and some good old fashioned toe tappers!
Take for instance the unforgettable single Into the Light. In Sukie’s own words, this album is a resurrection album, a rally cry, a recalibration.
There is an abundance of ambient sounds weaving their way through her artistry. Sukie is always on the lookout for something that speaks to her soul. Her voice transforms, ricochets, melds, changes but her truth remains the ever constant North Star of her vocal prowess.
We have a favourite track, of course, and it’s because it’s a personal song We Try Not to Think About it now. Set in Los Angeles, this song is about the time Sukie and her long time collaborator and dearest friend John Lee Bird collaborated with The Lab Mag on a multi-media event at The Pacific Design center. Together we blew the cobwebs off the famous blue building. We were there to celebrate the work of John Lee Bird and to launch the IMAGE edition. The place came to life in one very loud evening of clanging bells and rolling symbols orchestrated by Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart, joined by Chris Pitman (Guns and Roses), David Kendrick (DEVO), artist John Lee Bird & of course, Sukie. It was a night to remember.
For those who weren’t there, here’s a fun throwback.
And as if it wasn’t enough to launch a new album Sukie recently collaborated with Tricky from Massive Attack.
“It’s a dream come true, I have recorded with an artist who I have admired since I first heard Maxinquaye and as wild as it seems I have collaborated with Tricky on the re-release of that album and sung Hell is Round the Corner (reincarnated ).”
So now we’ve whet your appetite with words, you need to hear the songstress blaze.
This album has been five years in the making! Finally, it’s available on all streaming services and exclusively selling on Bandcamp.
For added value and fun, a ten track bonus album (Out of the Dark Night ) featuring demos and alt versions of tracks is available with all album purchases.
