Liberate PINK

It’s happened again, Stuart Semple, artist and colour engineer is hell bent on liberating the pinkest of pinks from the clutches of Mattel and Barbie, so everyone can make art with PINK!

He has created his own version that is not copywritten and all of us can use it to make great art.

It’s called Pinkie - The Barbiest Pink. Anyone can buy it from Stuart, as long as they are not associated with Mattel, the owners of Barbie and the keepers of Barbie’s pink.

As he says on his website “Mattel - the owners of the Barbie brand have exclusive rights to ‘Barbie Pink’, a colour mark that prevents others from using it, including pop band Aqua for using the colour on their single ‘Barbie Girl’. Mattel have also painted a huge house in Malibu, consequently they now have a proprietary claim over anyone using the same colour pink for decorating which will be a blow to creators everywhere.”

We couldn’t agree with him more. Colours cannot be owned by companies or singular artists (yes, it’s a really lousy thing to do, Mr Anish Kapoor) just as much as seeds cannot be owned by behemoth companies or water from natural springs owned by conglomerates! The world needs more Stuarts!

We stand with you in your fight to free the pink!
