It’s the end of an era as the final chapter of the drama series, The Crown comes to a close.

In the above video, Bafta winner and Emmy award-nominated composer Martin Phipps reflects on the legacy of The Crown and how the series uses music and key instruments to focus on the emotions of specific characters. Phipps, who came onboard as the composer in season three, shares the creative process for developing the score for the series and placing unexpected sounds and instruments in an unusual but exciting way.

In season six, a relationship blossoms between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences. Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion. As she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairytale in William and Kate.

Part 1 of The Crown’s final season is now streaming and part 2 premieres on Netflix on December 14. Additionally, the full soundtrack featuring Phipps’ score for the final season will be released on December 14.
